This neighborhood and surrounding area can boast of a long and rich history dating back to the 1800s when there were only four property owners here. One of those owners helped to build Fort Vancouver. The buildup in the area really took hold during WWII when the federal government came in to construct and provide housing for the thousands of workers in the local industries. It was about 1942 the first large parcel of land was purchased to enable the VHA to plan and build homes.
That first 1000 acres was on a hill east of the city and consisted of dairy farms, a golf course, some garlic farms and lots of vacant land. There were 6 cities of almost instant housing constructed in Vancouver at that time. McLoughlin Heights, which encompasses the present day North Garrison Heights, was one of these six "cities". Two thousand war apartment type units and 5,386 row house units were built in McLoughin Heights. After the war, all of these homes were condemned, torn down and reconstruction began. Businesses slowly came in and expanded the commercial area, and the makeup of the neighborhood.
Many changes and many more people have come into the area since and more development has taken place to where there is very little open space left. This is a great neighborhood with good shopping, entertainment and all of the needed services and amenities to make it a great place to live and work and raise a family.
